Dedication of a Church
Introit: Genesis xxviii: 17
Awesome is this place: it is the house of God, and the
gate of heaven; and it shall be called the court of God. (P.T.
Alleluia) [Ps. lxxxiii] How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lord
of Hosts! My soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord.
Glory be.... Awesome is this place....
O God, Who, though unseen, upholdest all things, and yet for
the salvation of mankind showest visible signs of Thy power, give
glory to this temple by the might of Thine indwelling, and grant
that all who gather here to pray, in whatever trouble they shall
cry unto Thee, may obtain the blessing of Thine heavenly
consolation. Through our Lord....
In the church that is dedicated, the collect, secret,
and postcommunion are added to the prayers of the day
throughout the octave, by way of commemoration.
Epistle: Apocalypse xxi: 2-5
A reading from the book of the Apocalypse of Blessed John
In those days I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband. And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying:
"Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and He will dwell with
them. And they shall be His people, and God Himself with them
shall be their God: and God shall wipe away all tears from their
eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor
sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away.
And He that sat on the throne said: Behold, I make all things
Alleluia: Ps. cxxxvii: 2
Alleluia, alleluia. I will worship towards Thine holy
temple, and I will give glory to Thy name. Alleluia. The house
of the Lord is well founded upon a firm rock. Alleluia.
Gospel: Luke xix: 1-10
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Luke.
At that time, Jesus entered and was passing through Jericho.
And behold there was a man named Zacchaeus; and he was a leading
publican, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus, Who He
was, but could not because he was small of stature. So he ran on
ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to
pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up
and saw him, and said to him: "Zacchaeus, make haste and come
down; for today I must stay in thy house." And he made haste and
came down, and welcomed Him joyfully. And upon seeing this, all
began to murmur, saying: "He has gone to be the guest of a man
who is a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord:
"Behold, Lord, I give one half of my possessions to the poor, and
if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold."
Jesus said to him: "Today salvation has come to this house,
since he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to
seek and to save what was lost.
Offertory: 1 Paralipomenon xxix: 17, 18
O Lord God, in the simplicity of my heart I have joyfully
offered all these things; and I have seen with great joy Thy
people which are here present: O God of Israel, keep this will,
O God, Who art Thyself the Giver of these gifts that are to
be consecrated to Thee, pour forth Thy blessing on this house of
prayer, that all those who call upon Thy name herein may
experience the help of Thy protection. Through our Lord....
Communion: Matthew xxi: 13
My house shall be called a house of prayer, saith the Lord:
in it everyone who asks receives: and he who seeks finds: and
to him who knocks it shall be opened.
We beseech Thee, almighty God, that in this place, which we,
all unworthy, have dedicated unto Thy name, Thou wouldst
mercifully hear all who call upon Thee. Through our Lord....
