Pray for the Conversion of Everyone to the Catholic Faith
The New Order no longer celebrates the feast of Saint Peter's Chair at Rome, and they no longer consider it to be “politically correct” or “ecumenical” to pray for anyone's conversion, but faithful Catholics are urged to do both. I have added [in brackets] an intention or two to the list of those for whom we ought to pray.
According to my 1961 Maryknoll Missal:
Far back in the fifth century Saint Prosper of Aquitaine wrote: “The Church pleads before God everywhere, not only for the saints and those regenerated in Christ, but also for all infidels and all enemies of the cross of Christ, for all worshippers of idols, for all who persecute Christ in His members, for the Jews whose blindness does not see the light of the Gospel, for heretics and schismatics who are alien to the unity of faith and charity.”
Early in the twentieth century Father Paul James Francis, S.A., conceived the idea of an octave of intensified prayer for Church unity, to take place from January 18, feast of Saint Peter's Chair in Rome, to January 25, feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. The objective of the “Chair of Unity Octave,” in Father Paul's words, was “the unity of Christendom around the Apostolic See, and the conversion of the world to Christ.”
Prayer for Church Unity
To Be said during the Chair of Unity Octave, January 18 to 25
(From the Feast of Saint Peter’s Chair in Rome until the feast of the
Conversion of Saint Paul)
v. That they all may be one, as Thou, Father, in Me and I in Thee; that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.
v. I say unto thee, that thou art Peter;
r. And upon this Rock I will build My Church.
v. O Lord Jesus Christ, Who said unto Thine apostles; «Peace I leave you, My peace I give you »; regard not our sins, but, rather, the faith of Thy Church; and grant unto her that peace and unity which are agreeable to Thy will. Who livest and reignest God forever and ever.
r. Amen.
