Psalm
xvii (a)
1. I love Thee, O Lord, my
strength, * O Lord, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.
2. My God, my rock of
refuge, * my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold!
1. Praise be the Lord, I
exclaim, * and I am safe from my enemies.
2. The breakers of death
surged round about me, * the destroying floods overwhelmed me;
1. The cords of the nether
world enmeshed me, * the snares of death overtook me.
2. In my distress I called
upon the Lord * and cried out to my God;
1. From His temple He heard
my voice, * and my cry to Him reached His ears.
2. The earth swayed and
quaked; the foundations of the mountains trembled * and shook when His wrath
flared up.
1. Smoke rose from His
nostrils, and a devouring fire from His mouth * that kindled coals into flame.
2. And He inclined the
heavens and came down * with dark clouds under His feet.
1. He mounted a cherub and
flew, * borne on the wings of the wind.
2. And He made darkness the
cloak about Him; * dark, misty rain clouds His wrap.
1. From the brightness of
His presence * coals were kindled to flame.
2. And the Lord thundered
from heaven; * the Most High gave forth His voice;
1. He sent forth His arrows
to put them to flight, * with frequent lightnings He routed them.
2. Then the bed of the sea
appeared, * and the foundations of the world were laid bare,
1. At the rebuke of the
Lord, * at the blast of the wind of His wrath.
2. Glory be to the Father
and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost.
1. As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end.
Amen.
Psalm xvii (b)
1. He reached out from on
high and grasped me; * He drew me out of the deep waters.
2. He rescued me from my
mighty enemy * and from my foes, who were too powerful for me.
1. They attacked me in the
day of my calamity, * but the Lord came to my support.
2. He set me free in the
open, * and rescued me, because He loves me.
1. The Lord rewarded me
according to my justice; * according to the cleanness of my hands He requited
me;
2. For I kept the ways of
the Lord * and was not disloyal to my God;
1. For His ordinances were
all present to me, * and His statutes I put not from me.
2. But I was wholehearted
toward Him, * and I was on my guard against guilt.
1. And the Lord required me
according to my justice, * according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.
2. Toward the faithful Thou
art faithful, * toward the wholehearted Thou art wholehearted.
1. Toward the sincere Thou
art sincere, * but toward the crooked Thou art astute;
2. For lowly people Thou
save * but haughty eyes Thou bring low;
1. Thou indeed, O Lord, give
light to my lamp; * O my God, Thou brighten the darkness about me;
2. For with thine aid I run
against an armed band, * and by the help of my God I leap over a wall.
1. God's way is unerring,
the promise of the Lord is fire-tried; * He is a shield to all who take refuge
in Him.
2. Glory be to the Father
and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost.
1. As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end.
Amen.
Psalm xvii (c)
1. Who is God except the
Lord? * Who is a rock, save our
God?
2. The God who girded me
with strength * and kept my way unerring;
1. Who made my feet swift as
those of hinds * and set me on the heights;
2. Who trained my hands for
war * and my arms to bend a bow of brass.
1. Thou hast given me Thy
saving shield; Thy right hand has upheld me, * and Thou hast stooped to make me
great.
2. Thou made room for my
steps; * unwavering was my stride.
1. I pursued my enemies and
overtook them, * nor did I turn again until I made an end of them.
2. I smote them and they
could not rise; * they fell beneath my feet.
1. And Thou girded me with
strength for war; * Thou subdued my adversaries beneath me.
2. Mine enemies Thou put to
flight before me, * and those who hated me Thou destroyed.
1. They cried for help, but
no one saved them; * to the Lord, but He answered them not.
2. I ground them fine as the
dust before the wind; * like the mud in the streets I trampled them down.
1. Thou rescued me from the
strife of the people; * Thou made me head over nations;
2. A people I had not known
became my slaves; * as soon as they heard me they obeyed.
1. The foreigners fawned and
cringed before me; * they staggered forth from their fortresses.
2. The Lord live!
And Blessed be my Rock! * Extolled be God my savior.
1. O God, who granted me
vengeance, * who made peoples subject to me
2. And preserved me from my
enemies, truly above my adversaries Thou exalt me * and from the violent man
Thou hast rescued me.
1. Therefore will I proclaim
Thee, O Lord, among the nations, * and I will sing praise to Thy name,
2. Thou who gave great
victories to Thy king and showed kindness to Thine anointed, * to David and his
posterity forever.
1. Glory be to the Father
and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost.
2. As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, * world without end.
Amen.
